Fire Protection and Safety Tips

Fire Protection & Safety Tips | Knee’s Electrical Service Blog

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), electrical failures cause nearly 50,000 residential fires every year in the United States. Because of these shocking statistics, we want our customers to be aware of some safety tips they can use to decrease the chances of a fire.

Helpful Fire Safety Tips

October is National Fire Protection Month. Because the air is dry during fall and the weather is often more windy, fires can spread rapidly and cause massive destruction to homes, businesses, and lives. Thus, it is important to practice safe habits to avoid starting an electrical fire.

Here are some fire protection and safety tips to help keep you and others safe this fall:

  1. Recognize warning signs of faulty electrical systems. If the lights in your home or business flicker often, or you experience blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers, it may be an indication that the wiring in your home or business is faulty or old. Outlets that are hot to the touch, as well as discolored switch plates or cords, may also alert you to a potential problem. Faulty wiring can spark and cause a fire. That is why you should hire a certified technician to inspect, repair, and replace the electrical systems in your home.
  2. Keep flammable materials away from heat sources. Light bulbs can burn extremely hot. Make sure you get bulbs that are the correct wattage for all fixtures, and keep bedding, drapes, blankets, upholstery, and other flammable materials a safe distance away from lamps. It is also a good idea to avoid placing light bulbs in front of windows that allow a strong breeze to blow. If drapes come into contact with a hot bulb, or a lamp is knocked over by the wind onto carpet, this could start a dangerous fire.
  3. Never do it yourself. When it comes to electrical wiring, repairs, and other projects, doing it yourself if you don’t have the training is a recipe for disaster. Instead, when you have electrical problems, call an experienced technician to come fix the issues in a safe and effective manner. This can help prevent an accident and keep you and your family safe.
